Service-Learning Day 2007: Promoting & Problematizing Community Relations
9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2007
Key West Room, Student Union at UCF
Please join us as we examine service-learning as it folds into other visions of social justice. If you attend Jonathan Kozol’s keynote earlier in the week, this event will be, in part, an effort to continue and encourage discussion about Jonathan Kozol’s visit.
Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, Director of the Center for Anti-Oppressive Education and Associate Professor of Education at the University of Illinois-Chicago, will join us as keynote speaker. Although the substance of Dr. Kumashiro’s address, Re-Framing Teacher Quality: Initiatives from the Right and Troubling Responses from the Left, may not address service-learning pedagogy directly, we are interested in widening the lens through which service-learning is often viewed. In addition, our partnership roundtable members - service-learning faculty, a student who has participated in service-learning projects and the principal of an elementary school in Orlando’s urban community - will discuss complexities inherent to service-learning projects, and specifically to the process of creating connections between the university and the community around it. This event is for any faculty, staff, or administrator who is interested in the university’s role in society.
RSVP by Tuesday, February 20, 2007 to reserve your seat at this special event! Please let Amy know if you will participate the full day, part of the day and/or for lunch by contacting her at azeh@mail.ucf.edu or 407-823-4395.
